A Lasting Impact

Since Troop 1910 was founded in 1998, many youth have been given opportunities and gained knowledge during their time in the Troop. So many have gone on to become Eagle Scouts, College Graduates, Analysts, Active Duty Military Officers, IT Specialists, Business Owners, and raising their own families, all over the world. Here they share their life lessons, experiences, and how they have put their knowledge into action.

Being a scout in Troop 1910 has left me with a profound appreciation for nature. Not only the beauty and awe of it, but also the pairing of enduring physical and mental challenges. Whether hiking, canoeing, or camping I’ve learned skills that equip me to further my desire to interact with the natural world around me. Apart from that I’ve gained essential team building experience that I carry with me into my home and work place. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the adventures Troop 1910 has given me.

In Scouts, each Troop is different. I considered multiple troops when I was moving up from Cub Scouts, but ultimately I chose Troop 1910 after I visited their Potomac River island campout. I saw how well-organized their wilderness camp was. Everyone was having fun, and it felt like a real adventure–unlike anything I had experienced in my video games.

During my time as a Scout in Troop 1910, our Troop was filled with motivated fathers and sons who loved the outdoors. They taught me the way of the woods and gave me a love of nature that has followed me through life. And because the leaders of Troop 1910 have years of knowledge and experience, they could take us on high adventure trips that my peers in other troops didn’t have the opportunity to attend.

Alongside me on those adventures were the boys who would become some of my closest friends. But most importantly, Scouts gave me quality time with my Dad. The memories we shared in Scouts are some of our fondest memories together. Thank you, Troop 1910!

When looking back at my time in Troop 1910, I fondly remember all of the amazing activities and outdoor opportunities: the hikes, the canoe trips, the camping, the skiing, the backpacking, the yard sales, the merit badges, and many others. While I cherish those memories, what I carry with me every day far into my adult life are the values, lessons, and friendships gained during my time in Boy Scouts.

Those activities and trips provided environments in which I could learn and grow as a young man. The opportunity to work with a group of my peers towards common goals, and the responsibility to embody the virtues of the Scout Oath, were instrumental in forming the person I am today. The scouting environment also gave me a group of other families to learn from. Watching my parents work with my friends’ parents to develop the troop set an example of what a community can be.

Many of the challenges I faced during college and my career have had parallels to experiences I encountered in scouting. The problem-solving skills, teamwork, and perseverance I developed during those years gave me a head start when facing life’s obstacles. Scouting provided a foundation that has continuously guided me, allowing me to approach challenges with confidence and resilience.

I am grateful for all of the hard work and dedication every family put into Troop 1910 during my time. The lessons I learned will last a lifetime, and I wish every young man could have the scouting experience I did.
